GBACH Geography Fair

November 8th was the Green Bay Area Christian Homeschoolers (GBACH) Geography Fair. Since we were reading about The Netherlands (and William of Orange) when it was time to sign up for the fair, that is the country we chose.

Wesley and I spend an afternoon at the library and many afternoons on the internet searching for information to include on our display board. We learned all sorts of interesting facts about the people, places, and customs of The Netherlands.

The three main requirements for the fair were a map, a flag, and a food. Any other details were only limited by your imagination. We chose to cover famous people, holidays, and some general facts. My main contribution was a little slide show of pictures from the Netherlands set to music (Amazing Grace sung in Dutch) that we played on the portable DVD player. Most of the children dressed in clothing to represent their country, so I had three little Dutch boys.

We were able to borrow some real Dutch wooden shoes from a friend and those really added to the display. We made a windmill and tulips out of paper for additional decorations. For our food we chose Farmer's cheese and poffertjes (which are delicious mini buckwheat pancakes).

After setting up, the homeschooled kids took turns visiting each others displays before opening the doors to the public. Jerry brought Hayden and J.D. to the fair so they could check out the displays, taste some food, and see their brothers in action. The only thing that put a bit of a damper on the evening was Justus wasn't feeling so hot and ended up going home early with Daddy.

The boys did a great job talking to people, young and old, about their display. (Note Wesley's face in the picture above when a group of girls walked up!) It was a great learning experience from beginning to end! The boys are already looking forward to doing it again next year.

  1. What a cool display and the little
Dutch boys are very handsome. Rich
had a pair of Dutch shoes that they
would bring out for St. Nick's, maybe
the B.'s might remember that!!!! Can't
    imagine actually wearing them.

    Luv, G. Linda
