Birthday Fun!

Here are a few photos of Hayden's birthday.......

Here is the birthday boy:
Here is the cake I made for him. Hayden loves cars so I thought I would try and make a cake shaped like a car. They actually make a pan that is shaped like a car you can buy, but I'm too cheap for that! So I just made two cake mixes...one 9x13 and the other an 8x 8 with 6 cupcakes.
I put the 8x8 on top of the 9x13 and cut the tops off the cupcake tops to use as wheels. I dug through the cupboard to find some candies to use for the head/tail lights. Wesley asked why I made the tires flat. Jerry mentioned something about the "Big Three" and "Let them eat cake!".
See the little license plate? I just made it out of paper covered with tape.

Hayden liked it though and that's all that matters. See the gift bag Wesley made for him? It had a paper house in it for one of his cars. Wesley worked hard on it along with a card. I should take a picture of the card and post that as well. It was a Lightning McQueen pop up card. He did a great job on it!
...Happy Birthday, Dear Hayden....at least he blew out his candle this year. Last year he put it out with his finger and screamed!
Of course, he enjoyed his gifts! When he could get them away from his brothers that is! Justus was heard to exclaim several times, "Look what WE got!" See what I mean...Grandma Joddy sent a gift bag that lit up and played the birthday song. It was a BIG hit!
While the cake didn't win any awards for appearance, it was pretty tasty. Just ask J.D.

Happy Birthday A-Chee

Happy Birthday Hayden!

[In case you are wondering about the title of this post. We call Hayden "A-Chee". I have no idea how to spell it. That is just my best guess. It is a long "A" followed by a "Chee" as if you were trying to say H with a "y" ...you know...like sill-y or craz-y. But some how H-y didn't work. Clear as mud, right!?!]

Are you missing out?

If you aren't reading Jerry's blog...you are! (I am his proof reader so I can say that.) I encouraged him to try and get his posts published somewhere; he puts so much thought into them and I think they are worth sharing. So... he submitted his post from Tuesday to WisOpinion.com and they "published" it today on their PM links. His post was featured just 9 spots down from something written by Gov. Doyle!

When you click over be sure to check out his new blog design. He spent a little time last weekend "re-decorating" and it's look pretty good...if I may say so myself! :)

Inexpensive Christmas Gift Ideas

Want to save some money this Christmas? Try making a few gifts yourself this year! If you want to make a few things, you better get started soon so...here are a few ideas to get you thinking!

[To see any of the below photos a bit larger...just click on it!]

Bible Verse Name Frame
This could be for a first or last name. Pick several verses that reflect the person or family you would like to give this to and print it off on nice paper in an appropriate font then place the printout in a frame. Dollar Tree has quite a selection for $1. Here is an example of the one I made for our family:
Family Recipe Book or Box
Put all your recipes in one place! Type them up and put them in a binder (or put them on recipe cards in a box). While you're at it make a couple copies to share with a daughter, sister, or friend. I love tried and true recipes! My sister still uses the recipe book I made for her many years ago. Which reminds me...I should really update it for her since I have found many good recipes since I put that book together.

Photo Calendar
My favorite gift for grandparents is a photo calendar. They are available online at sites like Shutterfly or Snapfish. I make mine using iPhoto on my Mac and then take the .pdf file to Office Max to print out.Or you can just bring in 12 photos of your choice and they'll do everything for you. Last year they were about $10 each which was the lowest price I had ever paid! I usually call the week after Thanksgiving and they have some kind of special going.

Books!

Make a book for a toddler/young child by getting a blank book and writing a story yourself. If you aren't a writer, make it a book of favorites (colors, food, etc.) or educational (numbers, letters, etc.). I talked a bit about how I made books for my boys here. You can get blank books at Bare Books or at a local teacher supply type store (like The Schoolhouse). Or join Paper Back Swap! List some books you don't want anymore and get some to give.

Can you crochet? If not, it is easy to learn! Really! Google instructions or watch You Tube if you are a visual learner!

Fleece Blanket with crochet edge
I made this as a baby gift but it could easily be modified for anyone depending on the fleece and yarn you choose. It is a fun twist on the no sew fleece blanket. Don't want to make a blanket? Check out the Lion Brand Yarn website for free patterns. There are so many cute things to crochet. I really like the Amigurumi patterns for little animals and play food. I am making this one right now (only in blue and cream):
They don't take much yarn so if you have a few left over skeins this would be a great way to use them up! If you need a simple gift for an adult they have a pattern to crochet a towel topper. If you bought a towel with a cute design and cut it half you could make two very inexpensively and quickly.

Dishtowel Angel
This is made from a towel/washcloth/potholder set. I got this one from my friend Sara a couple years ago. You can get these matching kitchen sets at many stores. (Watch Walgreens for a 3/$1 sale!) I haven't made one myself but here are instructions.

Potpourri Light Jar
I have made many of these and everyone loves them. A mason jar stuffed with potpourri and a short string of (20 count) lights. Let the cord hang out and cover the top with a piece of fabric cut in a circle tied with a ribbon.
Potpourri and lights are usually available at the dollar store and check thrift stores for mason jars if you don't have any on hand.

Little Wreath
I made several of these a couple years ago using dollar store (again!) wreaths. A simple ornament in the center with some fabric scraps and buttons hot glued around the wreath as well. You can make little cinnamon ornaments or use cinnamon sticks as well on these. Which are cute and make it smell nice too.

Washcloth Lolly
How about something sweet? But not to eat! I made these for a new baby gift but you could use a regular size washcloth. Maybe with a cute shaped bar of soap or free from CVS body wash?Gifts in a Jar
These are always nice. I like that you use them and they are gone. No clutter! There are several recipes available online. This site has recipes for layered baking mixes, brownies, cookies and bath salts. There are also several recipes for mixes on this site with printable tags included.

Gifts in a Mug
This is a twist on the above. There are many recipes for hot chocolate or spice teas online. Put a bag or two of one of these mixes in a mug. Maybe with a plastic spoon dipped in chocolate to stir! Or how about these recipes for cake in a mug...a great gift for a single person or college student!

Christmas Potpourri
This recipe is best fresh BUT if you have a dehydrator to dehydrate orange slices you can package up a dry version in bags to give as gifts. It smells wonderful!

Dish Towel Apron
A dish towel is the perfect size to make an apron for a small child. I have made a few with a towel (from...you guessed it...the dollar store!) and bias tape trim but this pattern makes it easier. A larger towel would make a larger apron for an older child, teen, or adult. If the dish towel is too long for your little one fold up the bottom and make a few pockets.

Ornaments
We have a family tradition of giving each child an ornament every year. My mom did this for me and now I have all the ornaments from my growing up years on my own tree. Instead of buying an ornament this year...make one! The dollar store (wow...again!) usually has little cross-stitch ornament kits that are quite cute. I found a nativity scene kit a few years ago and made several. (I would post a picture but it's packed away.) Here are several free patterns. Most of these would just take an hour or two to stitch.

Can't cross-stitch? How about these?

Get a package of old style clothes pins and make a snowman or angel. These are super easy...even the kids could make them! And they are unbreakable which is the only type of ornament we had on the tree last year. :) Fill your tree with several and as you have guests throughout the Christmas season give them an ornament off your tree!
If you are feeling a bit more ambitious try these light bulb ornaments. I got the instructions out of craft magazine several years ago. They take a bit more time but are really fun! Here is a similar pattern for a snowman and a penguin. Actually I think these are cuter...I might have to make more...

Well, I hope that gives you a few ideas. If I come across any more in my internet searches I'll try and post links to share! Feel free to share any ideas you might have in the comments!

Jesse Tree--Get Ready Now

Christmas is just around the corner. If you are looking for a wonderful way to make Christmas meaningful I highly recommend a Jesse Tree. We did this for the first time last year and it was great!

You can start with Advent (first Sunday of Advent is November 30th this year) or you can just start on December 1st. Each day read a Bible verse and devotional then hang an ornament on a little tree. There are many websites out there to give you ideas and there is no "right" way. Each family does it a bit differently.

There are "kits" you can buy, but it is easy to just make your own. The ornaments can be printed on paper or if you get real creative you can buy items to hang as ornaments that are a bit more three dimensional (like a mini-globe, twine, etc.). The tree itself can be a branch that is secured in a pot or you can use a mini-Christmas tree. That is what we did last year and it worked well.

Why Roz Loves Tuesdays

Parmesan Garlic Bread

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 t. garlic salt
1/4 t. rosemary
1/8 t. basil
1/8 t. thyme
1 T. Parmesan cheese
1 (160z.) loaf of French bread

Cut bread in half length-wise. Mix butter with herbs and cheese. Spread onto bread. Place bread halves crust down (butter up) on baking sheet. Bake at 300 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cut bread into individual pieces before serving.
---------
We usually have spaghetti or pasta of some kind on Tuesday so we can eat quick and get out the door for AWANA. I found this recipe just a few months ago and it has quickly become a favorite. The hint of rosemary reminds Jerry of Monte's in Tempe and Roz says she looks forward to Tuesday since she knows we'll be having this bread! You can thank me later...after you try it!

First Snow: A Timeline

Saturday morning we woke up to see it was snowing. The snow was even sticking to the ground a little bit. The boys were so excited! They had grand dreams of snowmen and snowballs followed by hot chocolate with marshmallows.

  • Time to round up stashed away snowpants, mittens, and boots for all four boys: 9 minutes
  • Time to put above on four boys: 12 minutes
  • Time spent outside before first boy asked to come in: 1.2 minutes
  • Time before all four boys were huddled around the furnace exhaust pipe "trying to get warm": 2.7 minutes
  • Time before all boys were requesting to come in: 4 minutes
  • Time it took to take off four boys wet mittens, snowpants, and boots: 6 minutes
  • Time it took to hang up above to dry on line in garage: 9 minutes

Oh, well. It was the first snow. I guess we will have to work on endurance. And get thicker mittens.

Argh! It's Pirate Night!

Tuesday was Pirate Night at AWANA. Here are my three pirates:
Of course, their favorite part was the fake mustache and little beard since normally writing on yourself with a marker is a big no-no. Hayden wanted one too so although he's not pictured and doesn't go to AWANA yet he had a mustache too. I used washable marker but they were still pretty visible the next day. Thankfully, we didn't have to leave the house.

Next week...affliction night. If I remember right last year I just let them each wear a band-aid. Maybe I'll try and be more creative this year. Or maybe not!

Latest Project

A couple months ago I was checking out a craft website that mentioned iron-on vinyl. That gave me an idea for a project. I use these larger bibs on J.D. that we lovingly call the "Mennonite bibs". (Since I order them from a Mennonite catalog). They aren't the cutest bibs, especially for boys, since they are basically clear plastic with a lace pattern. However, they cover better than any other bib we have ever used and they cannot be pulled off since they have sleeves and use a tie not velcro.

I figured I could make my own bib using a cute, more boyish, fabric covered in the iron-on vinyl. [Well, actually my first thought was to cover the fronts of all the boys shirts with the stuff but since that wasn't very practical I moved on to the bib idea.] I traced the old bib as a pattern and went to work.

Here is the finished product:
I have to say it turned out better than I expected! I even made my own matching bias tape. I am going to make a couple more. I think the next time I am going to try a thicker fabric, maybe a flannel. The vinyl doesn't add any bulk at all and I think that the thicker fabric would make it a bit sturdier. I am also going to try and find a way to write up the pattern and instructions so I remember how I made these since I am thinking this would be a good item to add to my ever growing list of baby gift items.

The View from My Door

This is what it looked like when I opened the front door early yesterday. When Jer left for work he mentioned it was foggy but I didn't realize just how foggy until I looked outside. We could barely see the mailbox at the end of the driveway!

Today the strange weather continues. It's downright tropical outside! The boys enjoyed playing outside in short sleeves. They even came in because they got too hot! In November! It hasn't even gotten close to the predicted, record-breaking high of 72 yet either.

Just last weekend I went around cleaning the windows and performing what I thought was a final lock down for the winter. Guess I should have checked the seven day forecast.

VOTE!

Consider this your friendly reminder...

I am not voting tomorrow. Actually, I voted last Tuesday. Since we had to change our address we thought early voting would be best. We still had to wait quite awhile in line. Partly because there were several people there and partly because city workers aren't know for their speed.

As you vote keep this quote in mind:

Always vote for principle,
though you may vote alone,
and you may cherish the sweetest reflection
that your vote is never lost.

~John Quincy Adams~

Unless you live in Florida. Just kidding. Kinda.
