LaForce Visit
Annabeth made her first trip to Daddy's work today! We stopped by LaForce (GB) for a short visit. The reason for the visit? We had to go sign our house over. LaForce bought it prior to our relocating. We'll rent it back for the month of October and be on our way to Arizona before November rolls around.

A New Adventure
2011 is going to end up a year like no other for the Shown Family! Like we didn't already have enough excitement adding a new member to the family... now we are going to add a cross-country move. As my friend Angie said: "What the WHAT?!?!" For those of you who haven't heard yet, I'll let you take a deep breath and relax a second before we get into all the details...
Okay. Ready?
Yes, that's right, the Shown Family is moving! Why? Where? When? Lots of questions! I don't even have all the answers myself. Because I like a good story (and this is going in the book), let's start at the beginning. Jerry was born in Arizona. I was born here in Green Bay. I moved to Arizona in 8th grade, met Jerry in high school, had Roz in 1991, and got married in 1996. Whew! When Jerry graduated from ASU in 2000 he wanted to move and asked me where I'd like to go. Back to Wisconsin was, of course, my answer. So we moved here in May of 2000 with Roz (then age 8) and no jobs. We're adventurous like that.
Actually, Jerry had a hint of a job when we moved and he did, in fact, get that job when we moved here. He worked temp jobs all summer and started his short lived "investment executive" career that fall. He quickly found out that wasn't what he wanted to do with his life and starting looking for another job. In 2001 he was hired at LaForce as an estimator. LaForce, for those of you who don't know, is in the business of doors, door frames, and door hardware. Not many people really think about doors, but how many doors do you walk through each day?
Jerry definitely did not graduate from college with a desire to go into the door business, but once hired he did very well. Shortly after he started he was moved to the scheduling department where his "attention to detail" skills have served him well. He has a teacher/mentor gene so he spent some time in the training department as well. A few years ago he mentioned that he would like to move up in the company and pretty much the only way to do that is to become a branch manager, so he told LaForce he was up for it when the time came. Who knew when or where that would be!?!
Back in May of this year, Jerry and I went to the annual LaForce dinner. While enjoying our dinner and visiting with Jerry's co-workers we listened to various people from LaForce upper management give little speeches. One person mentioned the possibility of a new branch for LaForce in the very near future and knowing Jerry was willing to move to be a branch manager, my ears perked up a bit at that news.
Shortly after the dinner, rumors started going around at LaForce about where this new branch was going to be located. Imagine our surprise when one of the places mentioned was Arizona! Honestly, at that point, I tried not to think about it. I was busy growing a new human being and trying to stay stress free to keep her put as long as possible. I couldn't let myself get worked up about a possibility, but Jerry and I did start to quietly discuss our options.
The day of the LaForce company picnic in July Jerry was called into the president's office and told that LaForce was, in fact, going to be adding a new branch in "a city just outside of Phoenix called Mesa" and that the place they were going to be purchasing currently had an office "out near an old Air Force base". Had he ever heard of it? [For those of you who don't know, that would be the former Williams Air Force base currently known as Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. We actually lived on this base-turned-student-housing for a few years back in the 90's!]
Quiet discussions then turned serious. Almost all our discussions began to revolve around the topic of moving. We discussed and thought and prayed and discussed some more. We told Roz and a few people who we could count on to pray for us and then thought some more. We wondered how to figure out if this was God's will for us. I came across the very helpful Voddie Baucham sermon about just that. [You should really listen to it!]
Knowing Jerry had been wanting this for some time, money wasn't the main thing we based our decision on, but it did play a factor. We truly love living in Wisconsin and the deal would have to be right for us to uproot our family and move back to the place we said we would never return to... Jerry's boss told him no one ever passed up an offer because of the money, to which Jerry replied he just might be the first!
Over the next l-o-n-g month we didn't hear much that affected us personally. LaForce had to take care of business... close the deal, due diligence, and all that. We couldn't really say if we were going to do it because we didn't know the details and we weren't sure what LaForce would offer Jerry (we had a certain number in mind that would definitely not be enough).
Wouldn't you know, the Friday before Annabeth was born Jerry got the first "official" offer. He was supposed to think about it over the weekend and get back to them on Monday. Annabeth was born Monday morning and, needless to say, Jerry didn't get into the office. He took off the whole week to be with the family, but did go in on Tuesday for a little while to begin the negotiation process.
I'll spare you all the details (ask Jerry if you want to know)... the end result is that Jerry got closer to (but not exactly) what he wanted as far as salary and benefits and accepted the offer. So, Jerry is now officially the branch manager of LaForce Phoenix. It's a huge promotion for him and, while it takes us away from our beloved state of Wisconsin, it is a great opportunity. I am very proud of Jerry for working so hard!
Jerry will be heading down to Arizona the beginning of October for a short visit to meet the newest LaForce employees and check out his branch. He'll also try to find us a house to rent. We just finished up getting estimates from moving companies. The plan right now is for us to move down there in time for Jerry to start work the second week of November.
There are still some unknowns right now (trust me I don't like it either). We are just taking it one step at a time. Next up on our to do list: we are planning a BIG garage sale for this Saturday. We are getting rid of a lot of furniture and big items. There will be lots of free stuff... it's just going to the thrift store if no one takes it anyway. So stop by!
As for the rest of the details... you'll just have to stay tuned...

House of Brotherly Love
The boys love, and I mean LOVE, to take turns holding Annabeth. If you let one hold her you better have time to let everyone have a turn!

"Little Sister"
Annabeth got this cute "Little Sister" outfit as a gift. Last Sunday, while everyone else was at church I put her in it and took about 50 photos. Unfortunately, none of them was "the perfect shot" I was hoping for, but the outfit was super cute and the baby even cuter.

Thank You Lisa
My pregnancy with Annabeth would not have been the same without the special help of my new friend Lisa. Lisa is a nurse and she came to our house almost every week for 20 weeks to give me my 17-P shots. She did this out of the kindness of her heart saving us lots of money and, more importantly, time!
Lisa stopped by when Annabeth was a couple of weeks old to meet the little one she helped to stay put. "Thanks" will never be enough, but I'll say it again anyway... Thank you, Lisa!!

Sisters!
Roz just missed Annabeth's birth by a few days. She made it home for a (semi) surprise visit the first weekend of September. I say semi-surprise because I knew she was coming, but just barely. She called me when she was on the way, but asked me to keep it a secret from everyone else. I was already emotional so I was glad she gave me the heads up!
Everyone was so happy to see her! It was a great surprise! Unfortunately, for Roz, parents of newborns don't make the best late night conversationalists. I think we went to bed right after the boys and left her up to watch TV alone. But we had a nice visit anyway and best of all she got to meet her new baby sister.
Roz is exactly 20 years and 10 days older than her baby sister!
We also got our first whole family photo taken while she was here!
I still can't believe we have two daughters!!

Annabeth's Homecoming
Annabeth and I stayed the full two days at the hospital. She was a bit sleepy the first few days and they were slightly concerned that she wasn't eating enough. In the end they decided to let us go home. As much as I enjoyed our little babymoon and having meals brought to me on trays, we were ready to go home!
So, on August 31st I got Annabeth dressed and ready to go home. She wasn't too happy about it at first, but she settled down.
She looked so tiny sitting in her carseat. And the newborn size outfit that seemed so small was actually a bit too big!
Daddy came to pick us up. The boys were waiting anxiously at home for our arrival. With Grandma Linda's help they had made not one but TWO signs for us!
Annabeth settled right into her new home life. Here she is sound asleep in her "bed" in Mommy and Daddy's room. She seemed to sleep through everything, which is good because our house is anything but quiet.
Over the next few days. She got to try on all kinds of cute outfits. Pink is so much fun!! I don't know who came up with the idea of built in shoes on the sleepers but I would like to personally thank them. They are so cute!
Of course, the brothers kept a close eye on her. They all loved to check on her and chat with her when she was awake (which if you know newborns isn't very often).
Jerry took the week following her birth off to be with us. Napping was going on all over the place! Hmmm... why wasn't I napping instead of taking this picture?
Right from the start Annabeth was a great sleeper. Those first few days I woke her up to feed her!
Actually, her sleepiness got her in a little bit of trouble. She wasn't gaining weight at the rate the doctor wanted so we ended up supplementing with formula and pumped breastmilk so we could keep closer track of what she was taking in. Which meant I had to pump. Since I pumped with all my preemies I was really hoping not to see that dreaded machine this time, but it was not to be.
It was a bummer situation for a couple weeks until she got it all figured out. Although she was officially not a preemie, it seemed she had a few preemie-like feeding issues. We worked through them and after about 2 weeks she got the hang of things and we were back to nursing exclusively.
Written out like that it doesn't seem like it was too bad, but it was a horrible time for me. I know part of it was hormones and finding out we were going to be moving probably didn't help either. Lots of tears were shed and prayers cried out. I really didn't want to miss out on that special bonding and all the benefits (to her and me!) of breastfeeding. And the thought of pumping and feeding for months really got me down. I am so thankful my prayers were answered. And I'm happy to say that after those rough couple weeks Annabeth has been an exclusive breastfeeding champ and steadily gained weight.

"Our Little Treasure"
St. Vincent Hospital puts up a board each month to post the births. There is always a different theme. Wesley's was lions and lambs for March. The twins (January) were little penguins. JD was Raggedy Ann and Andy. I can't remember Hayden's theme right off the top of my head, probably something that had to do with Thanksgiving.
Annabeth's was "Our Little Treasures" with a treasure chest on a beach and each baby born was a gold coin. Since she was born at the end of the month the board was pretty full! When the month is over and they take it down the hospital mails you the little name piece as a souvenir to put in your baby book. I'm glad I snapped a shot of the whole board because Annabeth's little gold circle wouldn't seem too exciting without seeing the whole board.

With Mom!
I can't tell you how happy I was to skip the NICU and have Annabeth with me. It is so different, in a good way, to have a baby room-in with you! You get to cuddle your baby without tubes and nurses. Visitors can meet your baby. Brothers can hold her! You can just look over and see your baby whenever you want! It is so much fun!
I just kept taking photos... of Annabeth in her little bassinet, with her hat on, with her hat off, her little fingers and toes, and with me. I'll tell you what... it made every single 17-P shot worth it! Best of all I got to take her home with me! (But that will be another post!)

Big Brothers!
After Annabeth and I got settled in our room Jerry went home to bring the boys back up to meet their new sister. They were so excited! My nurse said she got teary eyed watching the boys file in and give me a big hugs before meeting the star of the show: their baby sister.
The boys prayed every night for this new little baby to arrive safely and we are all so grateful their prayers were answered. It was so fun to watch them all meet her for the first time right there in my room and not in the NICU. And, of course, everyone wanted a turn holding Annabeth...
This is one of my favorite pictures from their visit.

First Tub Bath
Annabeth didn't really appreciate her first sponge bath in the hospital. As you can see she didn't much care for her first bath in the baby tub either...
...perhaps she'll learn to enjoy them in the future.
